Cosmo Caixa, Tibidabo, and Sagrada Familia

Dearest readers.  We’re back from another exciting and full day in Barcelona!

We met Elena and Lorena on the road this morning and drove into downtown Barcelona for the first time.  Our first stop was the unparalleled children’s science museum, Cosmo Caixa!  We got in for free thanks to Elena’s CaixaBank credit card.  Thank you, Elena!

There, we enjoyed dozens of fascinating and interactive exhibits.  Simon probably learned the most :)  We went through the physics, biology, and technology areas, and also saw the indoor aquarium.

Around noon, we drove up the hills around Barcelona to Tibidabo - a scenic amusement park beside the Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

There, we watched hillside roller coasters and flew on the T-1 plane over the park.  Then, we had a quick hot dog and focaccia lunch.  Nico and Bennett got themselves covered with ketchup and mustard.  Finally, Erika and the boys helped Simon through his fear of ferris wheels, and we all were rewarded with beautiful and expansive views of Barcelona.

Before we left Tibidabo, we hiked up to the Temple and even further up to its second deck for more great views of the city.

In the late afternoon, we drove back further into Barcelona to make our timed Sagrada Familia tour.  First, though, we stopped for a gelato treat.  Nico added to his hot dog flavored shirt by coating himself in chocolate and straciatella gelato.  Could be worse.

From the gelateria, we walked to the Sagrada Familia to see the nearly complete edition of Gaudi’s masterpiece cathedral.  The carvings were stunning and the colored stained glass windows made the space inside incredibly light.

Afterwards, we trekked back to our car, carrying the boys in their Omni carriers, and then everyone was revived in the air conditioned car.

Lorena’s family graciously made dinner for Elena, Lorena, the boys, and us all at their home and we enjoyed meeting them — Lorena’s parents; her brother, Pedro; and her aunt and uncle, who have very kindly let us stay in their beach apartment for the week.  The boys also had a great time with Lorena’s dog, Nuk, and her aunt and uncle’s cat, Lucifer (Luci for short).  Dinner was absolutely delicious, too!

We’re going to take it a bit easier tomorrow but will update you all then.
