After 6 airports, 5 flights, 1 overnight stay with family and 1 long (longer than my flight from Ireland to London) trip on the underground, I am finally at Regent's College. I checked in with Jon and Meg, two of the program leaders, and then got to my room, met my roommate Brandon, unpacked, showered and promptly passed out. The beds here are very comfortable so this will pose an interesting challenge going forward; to wake or not to wake, that is the question. Whether tis nobler to face the stings and arrows of tardiness and punishment, or to lie in bed and rest on... As you can see, I'm pretty jet lagged still.
Flying through Ireland was absolutely beautiful. As we were landing and then getting off the plane, all I could think about was how green Ireland was. The whole country seems to rest on a thick and dark green lawn. I was amazed to recognize some features of the Shannon airport even though I hadn't been there since I was 2 - 17 years ago. I remember getting sick on our emigration flight to America in May 1993 and my parents bought me a toy car in a giftshop... which is still there. Come to think of it, we may have actually flown Aer Lingus through Ireland... it seems really familiar.
The Irish accents on my flight were just awesome and adorable and I really wished, for a moment, that I had a random old Irish uncle or grandfather who could tell me of the land of Eire.
On my flights, I was able to finish Conrad's The Secret Agent and contrary to my earlier warning, the last 120 pages went REALLY quickly. It reads very much like Hitchcock novel with excellent, crazy suspense building in relatively simple scenes. It is actually worth reading if you want... just skip the stupid chapter where all the conspirators meet and argue about Socialism... you can read Das Kapital for that if you want.
We're all getting to know the other members of our group and our first classes start tomorrow so I'm off for now but check back soon. I'll finally have some pictures up tomorrow!
