-- Purpose --
We want this blog to document some of our favorite moments and experiences as we travel around the world over the years. This is partially for our benefit - so we make sure not to miss anything! But, it's also so we can keep in touch with our friends and family. We love to hear from you so let us know what you think!

Kilimanjaro Trek Day 2 - Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1

Emmanuel greeted us at 6am with some perfect, hot tea to enjoy in the tent. We then got our things ready, had a hearty breakfast, and began the 7km hike to Shira 1 Camp.  After about an hour, we emerged out of the rainforest and into the sunnier, sandier, and windier moorland.  This hike kept going up, up, up, and as a result we were treated to stunning vistas almost every time we turned around.

Priscus and Joseph kept a great, sustainable pace as we climbed from 2650m to 4000m before beginning our descent down to our campsite, which is at 3600m.  As we began our descent, we turned the corner and could see our overall goal - the Mountain - though the peak was obscured by clouds.  Still, the site energized us to get to camp.

After a tasty lunch, we rested in our tent and jammed out to Peter Gabriel while it gently rained outside.

We did get outside when the clouds parted to see a beautiful sunset view of the mountain.

After dinner, Simon busted out the astronomy binoculars and we took in the crystal clear view of the starry sky.  Now it’s time to relax and let the body recover before tomorrow’s challenge.
