Once again we woke up to spectacular views this morning as the clouds had all cleared overnight - we could see the peak, Mt. Meru, and Moshi Town clearly.
We also had to say farewell to two crew members, Emmanuel and Mtaki, who had to leave suddenly for a family emergency. They are amazing humans and we will all miss them quite a bit as we continue our climb.
We had a tasty breakfast and then began the largely vertical climb up to Barafu - Kilimanjaro Base Camp. Barafu is Swahili for snow, so we’re in for a cold night and morning. Over three hours we climbed from 3950m to 4650m - almost 2500ft - in four linear kilometers. We enjoyed stark views of the peak, uninterrupted by clouds, as well as the surrounding sites.
We got to camp around 11:00am and have been arranging our gear for the summit climb tomorrow. We will be waking up at 11:00pm, having a quick breakfast, and then leaving Barafu Camp right on the stroke of midnight to begin the slow and steady march to Uhuru Peak. Now, we’re going to have some lunch and then try to get some sleep. Wish us luck!
