We want this blog to document some of our favorite moments and experiences as we travel around the world over the years. This is partially for our benefit - so we make sure not to miss anything! But, it's also so we can keep in touch with our friends and family. We love to hear from you so let us know what you think!

Kilimanjaro Trek Day 5 - Barranco to Karanga

We woke up this morning to even more frost, even on our tent, but our sleeping bags did their jobs and kept us warm through the night.

When we stumbled out of our tent, we got to see the beautiful campsite clearly for the first time.  We are getting very used to sleeping amongst the clouds, and the mountain definitely looks bigger the closer we are getting!

After a good breakfast, we began our climb up the 300m Baranco Wall, from which the campsite got its name.  This was our favorite part of the hike so far - we scrambled along the rocks and were rewarded with spectacular views at every turn.

After a short break at the top (at 4200m) we trudged down for the next two hours to the Karanga River at 3750m, and then back up a steep, switchback path to the Karanga campsite at 3950m.  Today was a shorter day of climbing and tomorrow will be steep but also short, but we are conserving and building our energy reserves for the final push on Sunday.

While resting in the tent, Simon also discovered that after five days he shouldn’t take off his hat anymore.
