Today again began with a 6am wake up with tasty tea from Emmanuel. We had breakfast with Priscus at 7am and were on our way across the Shira plateau by 8am—gradually climbing from 3600m to 3800m over 10km. Along the way, we saw more Moorland vegetation and got great views of the mountain. We also talked quite a bit with Priscus and Joseph as Joseph set our pace.
After a little over 3 hours we made it to the Shira 2 Camp nestled on the edge of the plateau.
We spent the early afternoon resting, reading, and doing a little napping in our tent while it rained. Later, when the skies parted, we went on an acclimatization hike to see (but not yet hike up) the Lava Tower, getting up to 4000m and building a carin before going back down to camp. There, we had a great dinner and conversation with Joseph. Now we’re back in our tents in our warm sleeping bags, dreading the inevitable moment when we’ll each have to pee and go outside into the cold, albeit briefly!
